Hui Lin presented his PhD Final Defense, “Detection and Prevention of Intrusions in Power Systems’ Cyber-Physical Infrastructure,” today. His committee was comprised of Pete Sauer, Bill Sanders, Saurabh Amin (MIT), and advisors Ravi Iyer and Zbigniew Kalbarczyk. Hui will now join the faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno. Congratulations Hui!!!

The Depend Group was proud to celebrate with its recent PhD Graduates, Zak Estrada and Cuong Pham. Zak is currently an Assistant Professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Cuong Pham is the Engineering Lead at Anduin Transactions.
Zak’s thesis is entitled, “Dynamic reliability and security monitoring: a virtual machine approach.”
Cuong’s thesis is entitled, “Continuous monitoring methods to achieve resiliency for virtual machines.”
‘Inter-Ictal Seizure Onset Zone Localization Using Unsupervised Clustering and Bayesian Filtering’ was selected as one of the six finalists of the student paper competition sponsored by the IEEE EMBS society at the 8th International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering (NER’17). The six finalists were selected based on the scores given to their papers by the reviewers.

Depend Group alum Homa Alemzadeh has been awarded the William C. Carter PhD Dissertation Award in Dependability which is given by the IEEE Technical Committee on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance and the IFIP Working Group 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance. It has been presented annually since 1997 to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of dependable computing through his or her graduate dissertation research. Homa will receive this honor at the 47th IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN2017).

Through data analysis, scientists can determine subtypes of diseases, as well as how drug treatments will influence individual patient prognoses. Arjun Athreya, a CSL PhD student in electrical and computer engineering, works at the forefront of this precision medicine work with Mayo Clinic.
Arjun Athreya was awarded the 2017 Rambus Computer Engineering Fellowship from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Michael Farmwald donated stock from Rambus, Inc. to the University of Illinois to be used to provide funds for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Rambus Computer Engineering Fellowship has been established to recognize a graduate student in the Computer Engineering Area for outstanding research. This fellowship is a $5,000 fellowship for one year.
